Curt & Buddy
I'm semi-retired. I have a degree in English from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. I've always been a writer. About ten years ago, I started a newspaper column called the Empty Nest. The Empty Nest is carried by about a dozen or so newspapers in Iowa. By the way, I write for free, which the smaller newspapers appreciate immensely. And I appreciate the opportunity, because the weekly column is a wonderful creative outlet, as well as good discipline.
My progression into photography was natural, since many of my columns contain a photo. I became hopelessly addicted to photography. I do all the work myself, i.e., take the picture, print, build my own frames from barnboard, cut my own non-glare glass, the whole schmear.
Sheep in Winter (above) has won two first place awards in local art contests. My work is on display at the Fort Madison Area Art Association in Fort Madison, the Burns Gallery and Tea Emporium in Bonaparte, and my home. Yall come by now, hear? My work has been featured by Two Rivers Bank in Mt. Pleasant and Iowa Wesleyan College. In February of 2012, the Burns Gallery in Bonaparte will be featuring my work. Hot damn!
The welding of rusty junk together to make sculptures is a product of just wanting to stick metal together for 3D "art." So, between writing, photography, and welding, I manage to keep myself busy (but not out of trouble!) Life is so short. Have fun!
